Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring Delivers Style...At A Cost

Unique Look and Fantastic Texture For Your Floor

If you were to install hand scraped hardwood flooring into your home, the look and feel of the room would be instantly changed.

Not only will it look incredibly beautiful but the texture is fantastic too. Because the boards are much wider than normal this truly distinguishes it as being different from more ordinary hardwood flooring.

However although it may be beautiful to look at it can be extremely expensive to buy and then install.  So just what is hand scraped hardwood flooring?

This type of flooring is first sawn into shape at the sawmill.  Then each plank or board will be hand scraped in order to smooth out any roughness in the wood.  By doing this the wood has a more rough hewn texture which can be extremely attractive in any home once installed, compared to the other types of wood flooring that are available.

Work Done by Hand

Unfortunately when it comes to purchasing this type of flooring you will find that it can not be purchased ready for installation at your local home-improvement store or lumber yard.  Normally time is required in order for the boards to be produced and because the work on it is carried out by hand the price is very expensive in comparison to other forms of wood flooring such as bamboo or even laminate wood flooring.  Normally the cost of this type of flooring can start from around $15 per sq ft compared to say $4.50 for laminate flooring.

Also you will find that this type of flooring retains all the imperfections that you would find in wood in its natural state including any gaps.  So you will need to ensure that you can cope with having these imperfections in the floor through out your every day life.  Certainly if you have young children or animals in the home then it may well be wise to consider some other form of flooring rather than hand scraped hardwood flooring.

Fixing the Gaps

However if you are worried at all about the gaps in your hand scraped hardwood flooring you can do things which will ensure that these are filled.  You will first need to clean out all the cracks and gaps using a putty knife and follow this up with your vacuum cleaner.  After this, get some short lengths of rope and place these into the gaps and those which fit tightly should be used.

Next you will need to place these lengths of rope into a bucket of stain.  You will have to carry out several tests in order to ensure that the color of the rope (after it has dried) matches that of the wood.  Then once the rope has dried all you need to do is press it down into the various cracks and gaps that you want to fill.
